Route 66

Sunday, August 11, 2013

We started our travels pulling the Airstream to Westminster Co to see our Son and Daughter-in-law. We left the truck at his house and put the Airstream in storage. Then on Aug 1st we boarded the California Zephyr for a 33 hr train ride to the San Francisco area, to spend some time with our Daughter in San Jose area.

A great trip over the Rockies with lots of good views but very difficult to take pictures because of the moving train and the foreground changing at that speed. You think you have a good shot and as the shutter is pushed a tree or train blocks your view.

The eastern slope went fast because the Continental Divide is crossed inside the 6 + mile Mofet Tunnel - no photos. The western slopes were in clouds and rain all the way to Utah.

We followed the Colorado river through western co saw plenty of rafters and kayaks

and a stop at Grand Junction

With a wonderful trip through Ruby Canyon

the accommodations were cramped but comfortable

The dining car was nice with a good view and good food. meals came with the fee for sleeper compartment.

We slept through Salt Lake, Western Utah and Eastern Nevada and woke up a few hours before Reno. The lower bunk where Kathy slept was comfortable but the upper bunk that I had was even less room then the coffin racks on some ships I rode on in the Navy. it was an adventure climbing up in the rack.

then up Donner pass in the Sierras with many fly fishermen

we went through Sacramento and the inland valley in the afternoon

arriving in The San Francisco area in a little town east of Oakland, Emeryville ca where we met our Daughter. Great trip 32.5 hours
